When I started, there were two instances where I got an afternoon drive position and they said, you know, you’re the first female in this market to work that afternoon drive position. And I said, you know, I’m not gonna be proud of that because that shouldn’t even be an issue. I would like to think that whatever position they’ve asked me to fill, I can do this.”

Radio announcer Stacey Thompson recalls the “eye-opening experience” she had during the beginning of her career in the 90s. She was apprehensive about reporting sexist comments made towards her, and wondered whether she should keep quiet in order to “keep up with the boys club”. Stacey feels you need to have a tough skin to be in this business, but also recalls a station she worked at that had almost all women on air, with her male manager explaining that he simply hired based on talent. With over 25 years of experience in the radio industry, Stacey says she had to make a lot of sacrifices as a woman when she started, but now those struggles are becoming non-issues.
